Church News—LIGHT ON THE CORNER
History of our Methodist Church
Founded in 1845 with eight members, the early services were held in members' homes. No picture of the first official church, which was on Stockbridge Street, has been found.
In the first photo, the congregation occupied this building on Church Street from 1874 to 1905. The building featured two front doors, one for the ladies and one for the men. It was torn down and replaced by a church parking lot.
In the second photo, our third church was built in 1905 on Main Street between Church Street and College Street. It had a real pipe organ powered by a hand pump manipulated by young boys.
When it was torn down to make way for the new church in 1966, the one-story building to its right was moved to become the Youth House. The stained glass window survived.
Lastly, the 1905 building was replaced with the current building in 1967.
